Why Steel Shopfronts Are Having a Moment – And Why They’re Here to Stay

Walk down any street in London’s better retail districts and you’ll notice something. The shops worth stopping at – the ones that make you slow down, look twice, and actually go in – increasingly have one thing in common. Steel frames. Black, slim, precise. The kind of shopfront that doesn’t beg for attention but gets it anyway.

It’s not a coincidence. And it’s not just aesthetics.

Aluminium had its moment. Steel is having its.

For decades, commercial shopfronts defaulted to aluminium. It’s lighter, cheaper and easier to work with. But cheaper comes with trade-offs – and the most visible one is character. Aluminium shopfronts have a particular sameness to them. The profiles are thicker than they look in renders, the corners never quite as crisp, the overall impression somehow both busy and anonymous at the same time.

Steel doesn’t have that problem. The sightlines are genuinely slim. The material carries an honesty that reads immediately at street level. This is something that was made properly, by people who cared how it looked. Customers notice that, even when they can’t articulate why. In an era where brand experience extends to every physical touchpoint, the material your shopfront is made from is a decision worth taking seriously.

What actually makes the difference on a commercial project

The practical case for a steel shopfront goes beyond appearance. Steel is significantly stronger than aluminium, which matters when you’re spanning large glazed openings across a retail facade or a hotel entrance. Less material can do more structural work, which is how you get those genuinely large glass areas without the frame fighting against the transparency you’re trying to achieve.

For high-traffic environments, the durability argument is straightforward. A well-made steel shopfront will outlast the fit-out behind it by decades. It doesn’t dent the way aluminium does, doesn’t degrade the same way in sun and weather, and tends to look better as it ages rather than worse. That matters when you’re making a long-term investment in a building’s identity.

The Signature Commercial

Our B40 Commercial shopfront system was developed for the retail, hospitality and leisure projects where the facade is part of the brand, where what the building says from the street matters commercially, not just architecturally.

Large glass areas, slim profiles, bespoke entrance configurations and any RAL finish mean every installation is built to the project rather than adapted from a catalogue. No two are the same, because no two projects are.
