Anyone planning a renovation, extension or new build in the UK has probably noticed one thing over the last few years: prices rarely stand still for long.

Timber went up. Glass became more expensive. Energy costs increased. Transport became more expensive. Skilled labour costs have continued to rise. And now steel is moving sharply again.

According to the latest UK Government construction materials statistics, the price of fabricated structural steel increased by 20.9% in the 12 months to July 2026.

That is a significant movement in a relatively short period of time. For homeowners, architects, interior designers and contractors planning to install steel doors, glazed partitions or bespoke steel screens, this is worth paying attention to.

Steel Has Increased by More Than 20% in a Year

The headline figure is difficult to ignore.

Official UK building materials statistics published in September 2026 show fabricated structural steel prices 20.9% higher than a year earlier. What makes the figure even more interesting is how quickly the increase has developed.

In May 2026, the annual increase recorded for fabricated structural steel was 13.1%.

By June it had reached 17.7%. – By July it was 20.9%.

This does not automatically mean that every steel product, every steel door or every component has become exactly 20.9% more expensive. Steel doors have many other costs involved, including glass, hardware, fabrication, powder coating, transport and installation.

But it clearly shows the direction in which one of our most important raw materials is moving and steel is not the only material affected. The Government’s overall construction material price index was 5.9% higher in July 2026 than a year earlier.

Why Are Steel Prices Rising?

There is rarely one simple reason. The steel market is international. Prices can be affected by energy costs, manufacturing capacity, demand from construction and infrastructure, currency movements, transportation, raw materials and government trade policy.

The UK steel market has also recently undergone a major regulatory change.

From 1 July 2026, the UK introduced a new steel trade measure reducing overall tariff-free steel import quota volumes by 51% compared with the previous safeguard system.

Steel entering the UK above the applicable quotas can face a 50% tariff. Nobody can accurately predict exactly where steel prices will be six or twelve months from now. But when raw material prices have already risen substantially and new trade restrictions are affecting the market, it is reasonable to expect continued pressure on manufacturers and suppliers.

For businesses producing genuine steel doors rather than aluminium systems made to resemble steel, the price of the raw material matters.

Why Does This Matter When Buying Steel Doors?

A properly manufactured steel door contains considerably more than a decorative frame around a pane of glass. The manufacturing process involves steel profiles, cutting, welding, grinding, preparation, glazing, hardware, finishing and often bespoke fabrication for a specific opening.

With bespoke steel doors, each project can require different dimensions, configurations and engineering.

A simple internal single door is different from a large set of French doors.

That does not mean prices can remain unchanged indefinitely. If the cost of steel, glass, hardware, energy and fabrication continues to increase, eventually the industry will have to react.

Don’t Buy Steel Doors Based on Price Alone

Whenever material prices rise, cheaper alternatives appear. That is true in almost every area of construction.

Customers searching online for steel doors in London can find products at dramatically different prices, but the products themselves may be dramatically different as well.

Some systems marketed using phrases such as “steel look doors” or “industrial style doors” are actually manufactured from aluminium.

There is nothing inherently wrong with aluminium systems when that is what the customer wants.

The problem comes when completely different products are compared purely on price.

A genuine welded steel door has its own character.

The narrow sightlines, weight, rigidity and feel of steel are difficult to reproduce exactly using another material.
